About Us

Who we are

The Kybrook community’s journey reflects the spirit of collaboration, cultural pride, and self-determination. The achievements of its people, past and present, highlight a shared commitment to creating a thriving and sustainable future for generations to come.

Established in response to overcrowding in Pine Creek, the community’s foundation dates back to 1970. This milestone led to the formation of the Pine Creek Aboriginal Advancement Association (PCAAA) in 1972, which sought innovative programs to strengthen the community. One of their early achievements was securing the Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) program in the mid-1970s.

The Kybrook community is home to approximately 80 to 120 people, with its population naturally shifting throughout the wet and dry seasons as family groups move between regions. Predominantly made up of Wagiman people, the community’s cultural richness is further enhanced by families from the Myili and Jawoyn clans, who have joined through marriage and shared heritage. The community’s diversity is also reflected in the languages spoken, with Kriol as the primary language, complemented by Myili, Jawoyn, Wagiman, and English.

At the heart of the community’s progress is the PCAAA, whose leadership has been pivotal in fostering unity, empowerment, and autonomy. The board has not only provided governance for Kybrook Farm but also extended its reach to the Pine Creek Town Camp, ensuring both areas benefit from a cohesive and inclusive approach to decision-making.

Over the past 2.5 years, the committee has worked diligently to achieve compliance as an association, a crucial step in strengthening governance. Their efforts culminated on September 26, 2024, with the successful transition to the Kybrook Community Aboriginal Corporation, registered under the CATSI Act. This transformation marks a new era of opportunity, empowering the community to take full ownership of its policies and shape its future direction. As a result, communication has improved significantly, providing residents with greater access to essential resources and support.
